[E-SA Exclusive] A talk with JJ Schoeman about the haute couture equestrian event of the year #SunMet2017!

Entertainment lovers should brace themselves because The Sun Met Horse Race event at the Kenilworth Racecourse is back with a new sponsor in 2017

If you are one of those who believe in having fun in a classy and elegant way, look no further than one of South Africa’s most celebrated outdoor social, fashion and sporting events of the year.

That’s right, the Sun Met (previously known as the J&B Met) will, for the 40th time, merge equestrian prowess with high fashion at the Kenilworth Racecourse in Cape Town on Saturday, 28 January 2017.

Taking it back from the 1920s Great Gatsby look to the 2000s Modern Fashion era epitomised by style icons with boyfriend blazers and comfortable chic, this year’s theme for the event is beautifully titled; ‘Decades of Glamour.’

This theme aims to inspire attendees by referencing different fashion eras from the 1920s to now – decades that epitomised glamour, elegance and self-expression in celebration of the Sun Met's proud legacy.

Since we are so ‘over the moon’ about this prestigious event, we decided to interview one of the biggest personalities in the fashion industry, his eminence, Mr JJ Schoeman about what he thinks and what advice he can give about the whole Sun Met concept.

‘’I think it’s a wonderful day out, I mean I remember attending one of the J&B Met events, coming down on Friday and leaving on Sunday. That change of scenery and change of weather and seeing new people is just fascinating,’’ said JJ on the interview.

According to JJ, the 2017 Sun Met Horse race event will make attendees feel comfortable in whatever they are wearing since no one will be considered ‘’overdressed’’ or ‘’underdressed.’’

‘’I think it’s wonderful, after all, that’s what the theme is all about. I also think it’s wonderful that people get to wear anything they want since fashion can also be a way of expressing ourselves, and not all of us can do that the same way.’’

One of the most entertaining events lined-up for the day is; The Most Elegant Couple, which sees entrants with quirky, theme-related and uber glamorous outfits parade their race-day wear while the judges deliberate on which pair will be the most elegant of them all.

Giving advice to the entrants who wish to stand a chance in the completion, Mr Schoeman had the following words to say:

‘’I think the best way or key for a couple to nail this is to consider the rule of simplicity over complexity. Couples should always strive at enhancing and complimenting each other’s outfits, it should be about one half making the other a whole. For instance, if the girl is wearing black, the boy can enhance that black with a white item, a tie, shoe or bag.’’

JJ Schoeman revealed that he is currently working on something that is about to take the fashion industry by surprise.

‘’As you know that the Fashion Week is just around the corner, and last year I worked on a collection inspired by the decade. And since last year we rocked the Fashion Week, the stakes are probably high this time around.  We’ve got new styles that we started working on from last week, so we are always looking forward to new challenges and projects.’’
