In a first ever, Johannesburg has been chosen to host the MTV MAMA Awards. The amazing news was announced on Tuesday at a star studded event held in Parktown, Johannesburg, by BET Youth and Music Vice President Monde Twala.
The awards, which are scheduled to take place on 22 October will be hosted in Johannesburg for the first time and they will be taking place at the Ticket Pro Dome.
In statement released by MTV Africa, they described the awards as: “MAMA’s recognises and rewards musicians and achievers who have made the biggest impact on African music and youth culture over the previous year. The ceremony will feature African and international acts, along with the shows signature cross-genre and cross border collaborations.”
MAMA 2016 will celebrate African talent across 17 award categories, including Best Male, Best Female, Best Song and Best Collaboration by Absolut. Since the MAMA’s are regional awards they will also be recognising artists from Portuguese and French speaking African countries in the Best Lusophone and Best Francophone categories.
