Of course, with her being pregnant, it is no wonder Serena Williams is all emotional and reminiscent of the days when she was still climbing the ladder of success. During an interview with LeBron James’ media company for a personal-finance video series called Kneading Dough, Williams described how she didn’t touch the money from her first $1 million cheque.
“I just put it in the bank and I just remember I went through the drive-through to deposit my check,” Williams said. “They were like, ‘I think you need to come in for this.’ So I ended up going inside.”
Oops. Williams then explained that her tennis career was never about money and how making money wasn’t a concern early on.
“I’ve actually never played for money. I thought you would just go out there and you would hold a trophy. Not once did I think about a check,” the mother-to-be said. “At the end of the year, the tournament directors would literally hand me the check because I would never go get it. I just played for the love of the sport.”
What a surprise, especially seeing that she’s one of the most highest payed players in the world… it is incredible what a gifted soul can accomplish when priorities are in order!
