It seems like splurging the R14 million mistakenly received from the University of Western Cape might have caused more than a social media stir for Sibongile Mani. The results of her making it rain with the cash has put her life in grave danger as other NSFAS beneficiaries have expressed their anger towards her.
Sibongile is alleged to have spent over R800 000 of the money in a period of three months.
Even though she attended the press conference, leaders of the Pan Africanist Student Movement of Azania, refused to allow her to speak. They said it might jeopardize her case.
They also said her life is being threatened and have asked members of the public to give her the space to recover from the trauma.
After the press conference, Mani was mobbed by angry students, calling for her to pay back the money.
The police had to step in and drive her to safety.
“As things stands, she has not been charged with any crime, We are told of the ongoing investigating, so what we are doing is that we are preparing a proper legal defence just in case she gets charged. From where we stand we doubt she will ever be charged, from where we stand she didn’t commit a crime, but we will let the courts deal with that matter,” said Vusi Mahlangu, Pasma spokesperson.
