Local rapper Cassper Nyovest holds the hip-hop industry in his hands as he attempts to do what no one in his field has ever done – to fill the Ticketpro Dome as the headline act.
The platinum-selling artist, whose real name is Refiloe Phoolo, announced on social media his plan to fill the dome which has a capacity to accommodate 20000 people,
The only other local act to attempt this was the Parlotones and while they managed to sell out, this was only because promoters Big Concerts capped the number of tickets at 9000 times live reports
Event organisers agree that Phoolo has a difficult task ahead of him, and if he makes this work he would have definitely set a bar for other artists
Big Concerts CEO Attie van Wyk hailed Phoolo's goal as a "challenge".
"In South Africa we just don't have that culture of going to concerts and festivals. Hip-Hop artists are also not that popular, they don't shoot out the light. Kendrick Lamar, Jay Z and Kanye West were not a walk in the park and we struggled to sell out at the Dome."
Warren le Grange, creative director at O'mage, an experiential events company, said: "It will be difficult for one artist to fill the Dome; people will want to know why other rappers aren't on the line-up. You'll find that the white market, which is smaller, will easily fill stadiums, but the black market is saturated and people are spoilt for choice."
Is Casper biting off more he can chew….
