An SMS got Phiyega into trouble

The legislative portfolio committee on the police has launched an investigation into an SMS, purportedly sent by national police commissioner Riah Phiyega to DA MP Dianne Kohler Barnard, telling her: "Eat your heart out. I am not made by you and cannot be undone by you."

Gauteng police must say whether the number from which the SMS originated belongs to Phiyega.

Kohler Barnard received the SMS at 8.41pm last week after she had just finished a meeting with a television channel about the apologies made by provincial police commissioners appearing before the portfolio committee earlier that day.

The full text of the SMS read as follows: “I am black, proud and capable and get it clear you can take nothing from me. Eat your heart out. I am not made by you and cannot be undone by you."

Kohler Barnard did not know to whom the number belonged, but she confirmed that an SMS signed by Phiyega was sent to her last year from the very same number. It was reported that a journalist also called the number and Phiyega had answered.

We at Entertainment SA have learned that an Investigation was launched by the chairman of the portfolio committee, Francois Beukman, in terms of parliament's rule 201 into the SMS and ordered Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant-General Lesetja Mothiba to confirm whether the number belonged to Phiyega.

Phiyega came under fire in parliament again yesterday. The police portfolio committee has given her until month end to report on whether the police are complying with the Domestic Violence Act.

SAPS statistics state that there have been only a few cases of non-compliance, but civil society organisations have revealed a slew of grievances.

These include officers failing to arrest abusers, not dispatching vehicles to an incident, not informing victims about counselling, medical facilities or shelter services, and failure to open a docket and refer for prosecution.
