Maskandi artist Ichalaha is accused by the The Soil’s manager, Sipho Sithole of theft and fraud. Sipho says Ichalaha did a cover version the group’s Mkhululwa maskandi style without their permission and did not give them credit.
The Soil is said to be threatening to take legal action against Ichalaha.
Ichalaha admits that he took The Soil’s song but changed it to maskandi. “I took the as I’m a fan of The Soil and they’re my role models,” he said.
Sipho then responded saying “being a fan doesn’t give anyone the right to infringe on an artist, the composer and publisher’s copyright”.
Entertainment SA hopes other artists will learn from this and avoid embarrassment of this nature.
