Chelsea FC fans can now put their guards down because their long-serving defender John Terry is to remain team captain in the coming season, new manager Antonio Conte confirmed on Thursday during his first news conference since joining the Premier League club.
After having to appear more than 700 times on the pitch, the 35-year-old defender was rumoured to be leaving the London club, leaving fans in worry and speculation. But that’s all in the past now because John has renewed his membership by signing a new one-year contract at Stamford Bridge in May.
"John Terry is captain of this team. He is a great player with a great personality and charisma. He knows the club. We take all decisions together with the club and I am very happy John signed," said Conte the new manager.
Conte, who holds a great record of guiding Juventus to three successive Serie A titles from the year 2012 to 2014 before climbing up to become the Italian national team coach, succeeds interim manager Guus Hiddink.
When asked about his plans for his new handle, Chelsea, Conte responded:
"Every manager has his own idea of football and I want to transfer my ideas to the players. I have great passion for football, for my team and my work.
"It's important to have players who are ready to fight, play good football and transfer our passion and emotion to the fans. I am a worker. I suffer during the game. I want my players and the fans to see this."
Well folks, it seems like Conte has saved the season… at least Chelsea fans can now relax and have a peaceful night sleep without having to always watch their backs.
