It’s has been over a year and more since the passing of Simba Mhere, and till today, there seems to be no light at the end of this tunnel… except signs of possible drunk driving from the perpetrator.
Preshalin Naidoo, the man accused of causing Top Billing presenter Simba Mhere's death, might’ve been intoxicated during the accident, according to the state witness, Thabiso Laka.
This allegation was strongly denied as Francois Roets (Naidoo’s lawyer) asked Thabiso Laka on Wednesday during a cross examination if he was sure that what he smelt on Naidoo’s breath was alcohol.
Laka responded: “I smelt alcohol."
“It could have been something else‚” Roets told him.
According to Laka who claims to have witnessed the accident, Naidoo’s parents threw out a bottle of vodka from his car after he crashed into Mhere’s car on January 31‚ 2015.
The fatal accident saw Naidoo’s car crash into Mhere’s and then landing on the boot of the car Laka was travelling in.
Laka claims to have witnessed this as he was travelling with his mother‚ sister and brother in a Mazda 2 the day the heinous accident happened.
The accused, 24-year-old Preshalin Naidoo, is still on trial in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court‚ where he faces charges of culpable homicide.
Mhere and his friend‚ Kady-Shay O’Bryan lost their lives at the scene of the accident on William Nicol Drive in Fourways‚ Johannesburg.
Till today, South Africa mourns the death of Mhere as if it happened yesterday… may his soul, and that of Kady-Shay rest in peace.
