While Monday the 18th was a day dedicated to give back and lend a hand in and around your community tragedy struck, and an inspirational South African lost their lives while rising to the challenge of Mandela Day, dedicating his life to 67-minutes of charity.
Gugu Zulu sadly lost his life as he was attempting to climb the Kilimanjaro Mountain in Tanzania on Sunday. The race car driver reportedly experienced breathing problems on Sunday and was rushed to the hospital.
He had written on Instagram on Saturday: “Am having flu like symptoms and struggling with the mountain but taking it step by step. (sic)
Gugu and his wife Letshego were amongst a group of 46 South Africans who were attempting to summit the mountain, in hopes of raising funds for 350 000 girl children to ensure they don’t miss a day of school because of menstrual challenges. This expedition was a part of the annual Trek4Mandela Kilimanjaro annual climber’s expedition.
It was reported that Gugu experienced respiratory problems while they were en-route to the summit. The medical team supporting the trek put him on a drip and they descended the mountain with him, his wife, Letshego and the project leader, we are informed that the medical teams tried everything possible to save his life.
