World pays tribute to Fidel Castro

After 90 years of history making and living a pure socialist life, Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro has finally yielded his soul to its benevolent author.

"The commander in chief of the Cuban revolution died at 22:29 hours this evening," his brother, President Raul Castro announced on national television just after midnight Friday (0500 GMT Saturday).

Raul also announced that the cadre’s remains will be cremated early on Saturday, "in compliance with his expressed will."

Fidel Castro was a socialism preaching cadre renowned for trademark army fatigues and hours-long public tirades who came into power during the 1959 Cuban revolution.

His slogan "socialism or death’’ has seen him endure numerous assassination attempts and the disastrous US-backed Bay of Pigs invasion attempt in 1961.

"If I am considered a myth, the United States deserves the credit," he said in 1988.

Even though he has fallen, Castro served as an icon for developing countries and a driving force behind the Non-Aligned Movement. Due to his philosophies and the ability to use his freedom of speech when needed, Castro has shown small sovereign nations that they too can stand up to the world's biggest superpower.
