Nigeria’s Daniel Akpeyi on why he expected to be sacked by Kaizer Chiefs

Axed Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi says his numbers were not good and that he anticipated a move away from the club.

Amakhosi released the 35-year-old Nigerian keeper a few weeks ago and the lanky netminder has opened up about his sacking at Naturena.

The Super Eagles international admits that he could have done more to warrant his stay at the Soweto bigshots but he hopes to make his return to the DStv Premiership side.

Chiefs announced that a number of players including the likes of Bernard Parker, Samir Nurkovic, Kearyn Baccus, Lazarous Kambole and Dumisani Zuma would leave the club as their contracts would not be renewed beyond June 2022.

While Zuma has already joined AmaZulu, the keeper is yet to find a new football home but a move to another DStv Premiership side is on the cards.

Akpeyi also opened up about being linked to Sekhukhune United and the former Chippa keeper isn’t really choosy as to where he wants to play next term.

Speaking to the SowetanLIVE, the former Chippa United skipper revealed that he is a professional and that moving away from one club to the other is not something new to him.

“It’s not a new thing for me that I have to move from club to club. It’s something I take in good faith. Chiefs have been a family to me. The environment was conducive.

Hopefully, someday there’ll be something that will bring me back to the club because they’re my family,” Akpeyi told Sowetan.

“My numbers aren’t looking good. I think I could have done better in terms of the clean sheets but I am proud still that I played for Chiefs and contributed here and there.”

Born in Nnewi, Akpeyi moved from the Gqeberha-based Chilli Boys in 2019 and managed to make 69 appearances for the Glamour Boys.

In his contribution, he conceded 61 goals and managed to keep 27 clean sheets, and admitted that he could have done better for the Gauteng-based outfit.

“So far there’s nothing concrete,” he added when quizzed about his next move.
“It’s normal that I am talking to a few interested teams including Sekhukhune. I am open to everything…it doesn’t matter if I remain in the PSL or I go back to Nigeria

Meanwhile, the experienced shot-stopper has failed to make his way into the Super Eagles squad as they will meet Sao Tome and Principe on Monday.
The West Africans opened their 2023 CAF African Cup of Nations Qualifiers with a 2-1 victory at home over Sierra Leone on Thursday last week.
