Shock: Lionel Messi’s Argentina suffers defeat to Saudi Arabia

The global football fraternity is in shock following Argentina’s disappointing 2-1 defeat at the hands of minnows Saudi Arabia in their first FIFA World Cup match on Tuesday.

The Argentines were touted as favourites to secure an easy win over the Saudis but the side-coached former Zambia and Cote d’Ivoire manager, Herve Renard, emerged as victors.

Saudi Arabia left it late to seal the hard-fought victory after Argentina skipper, Lionel Messi, opened the scoring with a penalty in the 10th minute.

However, the Saudis fought back and equalised in the 48th minute before making it 2-1 through goals from Saleh Alshehri and Salem Aldawsari.

Resulting of this defeat, Messi and his teammates will be under severe pressure as they will meet a tough Mexican side on Saturday in the second Group C match.

The loss has definitely set the social media space abuzz and many football lovers are critical and are shaming Messi as Twitter trends suggest.

After the match, Messi said: “There is NO excuse. We will be more united than ever. This group is strong and it has shown it. It’s a situation we haven’t had to go through for a long time. We now have to show that we are a real group.”
