Ivan Toney: FA to Block Attempts to Circumvent Ban by Leaving England

Brentford striker Ivan Toney’s eight-month ban for violating betting rules is set to be strictly enforced by the Football Association (FA). The 27-year-old admitted to 232 violations and was fined £50,000 by an independent panel. Initially, it was thought that the ban would only apply in England, giving Toney the opportunity to serve his punishment with a club outside of the country. However, the FA is now expected to request a worldwide extension of the suspension, effectively preventing any attempts to circumvent the ban through a move abroad or on loan.

To implement the global suspension, the FA would take control of Toney’s registration and notify FIFA, as well as any club interested in signing or loaning the player. This procedure is consistent with previous cases involving English players who were sanctioned for breaking betting rules, such as Kieran Trippier and Daniel Sturridge. FIFA recently approved an extension to an Italian federation-imposed ban, resulting in the resignation of former Tottenham managing director Fabio Paratici.

While Toney’s suspension began immediately, he will be allowed to return to training on September 17th, four months before the end of his playing suspension. Toney committed the infractions between February 25th, 2017 and January 23rd, 2021, while playing for Scunthorpe United, Wigan Athletic, Peterborough United, and Brentford. Despite the setback, Toney has been in outstanding form this season, scoring 20 goals in 33 Premier League appearances to help Brentford climb to ninth place in the table.

Toney will miss Brentford’s upcoming match against Tottenham on Saturday, as well as the final match against league leaders Manchester City on May 28th, as a result of his suspension. Toney’s future career, both domestically and internationally, is now in jeopardy. The talented striker, who has one England cap, is under contract with Brentford until 2025.
