TOGETHER FOR THE FIRST TIME: 100% DESIGN AFRICA AND DESIGN JOBURG

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Design Joburg and 100% Design Africa, two influential forces in South African creativity, are joining forces to create an exceptional showcase of the country’s design, interiors, architecture, art, and culture. This unique event will run alongside Decorex Joburg from August 3 to 6, 2023, offering visitors the opportunity to explore the latest design possibilities in one curated space. With one entry ticket granting access to all three shows, the event will span four levels of the Sandton Convention Centre.

The combined 100% Design Africa and Design Joburg hall, located on Level 2 and supported by Sanlam Private Wealth, will come alive with over 60 dynamic brands presenting product design, furniture, textiles, graphic design, art, and fashion. This collaboration will provide an unmatched display of creativity and innovation in the South African design industry.

The shared hall will feature standout young talents, including Thabo Kopele, Khwebula Arts, and Siyababa Atelier. Thabo Kopele, a finalist in the South African Fashion Week 2020 Scouting Menswear category, will showcase his latest fashion collection at the Rising Talent stand. Sipho Khwebula Twala of Khwebula Arts will exhibit his adventurous carpentry skills through artistic furniture pieces. Siyabonga Mtshali, an African avant-garde fashion designer, will present Siyababa Atelier’s elevated luxury fashion pieces.

To set the tone for the exhibition, an exciting entrance feature curated by Clout/SA in collaboration with several brands will captivate visitors. Clout/SA will also showcase emerging South African talent, including Kalki Ceramics, the winner of the Nando’s Hot Young Designer Talent Search in 2022. Other prominent exhibitors in the hall will include Roche Bobbois, Entrawood, Stripped Collective, Studio Delta, Organic Empire, and KARE, offering a diverse range of designer furniture.

In addition to furniture and design, the event will uncover new design talent through various displays of rugs, accessories, and lighting. CRÉMA, importers of luxury European lighting and furniture, will introduce their Light On design competition. South African students and designers are invited to submit innovative table lamp designs for a chance to win R20,000 and see their lamp manufactured and sold by CRÉMA.

Textiles will also take center stage, showcasing their beauty, cultural significance, and the craftsmanship involved in their creation. Ronel Jordaan, a local textile designer, will present stunning tactile designs made from felted wool, inspired by nature’s forms and textures. The Keiskamma Art Project will display major textile artworks that contribute to archiving the rural Eastern Cape’s collective memory and preserving oral history.

The event will feature the Future of Design talks studio and exhibition space, building on its successful debut at Decorex Cape Town. Attendees will have access to free talks by industry experts, collaborative workshops, live demonstrations, and interactive displays exploring the future of creativity and innovation. Candice Erasmus, founder of Connect Everything Collective, will be among the all-star lineup of speakers.

Art lovers will find a diverse range of contemporary works at the Candice Berman Gallery, showcasing leading South African artists. The USURPA Gallery, South Africa’s first fine-art NFT gallery, will present digital artworks by local artists using futuristic Samsung Frame technology. Furthermore, Imiso Ceramics, the studio of acclaimed ceramicists Andile Dyalvane and Zizipho Poswa, will present handcrafted, collectible, one-of-a-kind pieces.

Overall, this collaboration between Design Joburg and 100% Design Africa promises to be a must-see event, offering visitors a comprehensive and immersive experience of South African design, interiors, architecture, art, and culture.
