Featuring Summer Walker and 21 Savage, Usher’s new single “Good Good” tells a nuanced story of a cordial breakup.
The track was produced, and it plays like a love letter to a former lover. Usher opens the track with a bittersweet message to an ex about their failed relationship. While he would have liked for things to work between them, he holds nothing but love and hopes she will find her soulmate.
Singing on in the radio-ready chorus, Usher says: “I hate that we didn’t make it to forever / Probably ain’t gettin’ back together / But that don’t mean that I can’t wish you better / We ain’t good good, but we still good.”
On the second verse, Walker jumps in and sings from a female perspective: “It didn’t work, but I hope you find another / I wish you peace, I wish you good sex and good sleep / Find the girl of your dreams ’cause I sleep well at night knowin’ this ain’t meant to be.”
21 Savage enters with smooth bars that echo the song’s theme on the third verse, rapping: “I know the person you is (Yeah) / That’s why I still wanna be friends (On God) / If you wanna open up a new salon, I still help pay for the wigs (Straight up) / And I help with the lease (On God) / You know I ain’t never been cheap (21)”
This latest collaboration from the music legend Usher is not random, as he previously collaborated with Walker on her song “Come Thru,” which samples his 1997 hit “You Make Me Wanna.” The back in April, 21 Savage joined Usher on stage at his My Way Las Vegas residency to sing “My Boo.” 21 Savage, an R&B at heart, is known for singing R&B classics in his own special way.
“Good Good” is Usher’s second single release of the year. He previously released his No. 1 hit “GLU,” the lead single from his ninth album.
The highly-awaited project is slated to release this fall on mega, Usher and L.A. Reid’s new imprint, in partnership with Larry Jackson’s newly-minted company gamma.
