The granddaughter of the well-known anti-apartheid heroes Nelson Mandela and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Zoleka Mandela has sadly passed away after battling with cancer for a long time.
At the age of 43 years, Mandela passed away on Monday the 25th of September, which is a day before her late her grandmother’s birthday who would’ve turned 87 this year.
The family took to social media to reveal the tragic news, and the statement mentioned that Zoleka died after being admitted to hospital on 18 September for ongoing treatment for cancer of the hip, liver, lung, pelvis, brain and spinal cord.
It also went on to share that recent scans had revealed significant disease progression, including lung fibrosis and several emboli (blood clots). It is said that she was surrounded by friends and family at the time of her death.
Zoleka was an activist and an author. She left behind four children. Condolences have been pouring in since the news broke.
