The US-based South African comedian Trevor Noah is currently in the country as part of his ‘Savanna Presents Trevor Noah Live in South Africa’ tour.
While gearing up for the shows, he has been taking some time to sit down with a couple of radio stations, and while at it, he revealed that he struggled with being accepted as the host of American talk show The Daily Show because people refused to accept him.
The comedian made it clear that he often felt lonely when he first started working on the show because people were rejecting him. It appears that for the media personality, not all that glitters is gold.
Sitting down for an interview with Clement Manyathela at Radio 702, Trevor Noah spoke up about facing rejection from Americans who did not want him to take over The Daily Show from former host Jon Stewart.
“I don’t think it was eight years of incredible success, there was a few years of struggling, which is part of the journey,” said Trevor. He said they took issue with things such as his accent.
“It was very lonely. It was lonely because I came in very much as an outsider, people were complaining even about my accent.”
Trevor also mentioned to Clement that things started getting better for him when fellow comedian Kevin Hart visited the show. As it turns out, Kevin was the first and only star who decided to take a chance on Trevor as the show’s new host. “Kevin came; he was the first guest on my show. He put his neck on the line there… I will always be grateful to this guy.
Trevor said he couldn’t get a single guest on his show when they were starting. “People were just like ‘we’re not coming, we’re not going to take a chance with this guy’.” – he added.
