The water challenge has taken social media by storm. Not just that, but the song has just hit number 1 on the on the Billboard US Afrobeats Songs chart. The song has also appeared on the Billboard Hot 100, making Tyla, real name Tyla Laura Seethal, the youngest musician to appear on the music ranking chart list, at just 21 years old.
Water is the first solo song by a South African musician to appear on the Hot 100 the chart since jazz legend Hugh Masekela’s Grazing in the Grass 55 years ago. The song is a mix of Amapiano, Afrobeats, pop and R&B and has surpassed 3.6 million views on YouTube and attracted 10.7 million monthly Spotify listeners for Tyla so far.
Paired with sexy lyrics and a sizzling yet complicated dance challenge that takes from the famous Bacardi dance, Tyla soon had a winning formula on her hands.
The song was introduced on TikTok first with Tyla sharing videos of herself dancing to the song. Then Tyla’s choreographer Litchi got involved to help get more traction to the dance challenge. Soon, the TikTok streets were on fire with many sharing their attempts at the dance challenge.
Of course, celebrities couldn’t hold back from joining the wave of the dance forcing us to decide who did the dance better. Dancer and personality Bontle Moloi shared her take on the dance. Taken from the beach, Bontle sizzled in a revealing tight fitting pink outfit showing off her toned body. And of course, she showed off her moves in true Bontle fashion.
South African model, actress and media personality Pearl Thusi also showed off her moves in an outdoor setting with a bikini on with what can be called a worthy attempt at the dance challenge.
Who do you think did it better between the two?
With many attempts comes a handful of failed tries with some TikTok users saying this dance was not created for the faint hearted or for those who don’t have their summer bodies ready.
Okay, here is a quick step-by-step guide for those who are still attempting the dance. You have your water, right? Get water in a small bottle that you can hold to pour onto your back. Make sure your back is faced against your camera when you do the dance. Be in an open space to be able to move your hips around just before the chorus begins. And…go!
