Upcoming Showmax Originals: A Diverse Array of Stories Unveiled

The popular streaming platform, Showmax is launching some exciting lineup of original content, offering a diverse range of narratives. Here’s a sneak peek into the upcoming releases:

1. TWENDE S1 | Premiering December 1

Showmax is venturing into the world of 2D animation with “Twende,” its first animated series. The show revolves around a pangolin named Twende, known as the slowest animal in the savannah. Twende’s mantra, “Life is about the journey, not the destination,” clashes with his job as a motorbike taxi driver. The series explores the challenges of balancing philosophy with the demands of everyday life.

Twende’s pilot screened in competition at Annecy, the world’s premier animation festival. 2023 has lifted the bar for African animation but as 702 entertainment commentator Yalezo Njuguna says on his All That Yazz podcast, “Twende is genuinely my highlight of things I’ve watched within African animation. It is so funny.”

2. SPINNERS S1 | Binge from December 27

“Spinners,” a high-energy series, gained attention as the first African series selected in competition at Canneseries. The story follows Ethan, a 17-year-old driver in a local gang, searching for a way out through the extreme motorsport of spinning. With a looming gang war, the series delves into whether Ethan can transform his life quickly enough.

A co-production between Showmax and CANAL+, Spinners’ cast includes Arendsvlei’s Cantona James and Chelsea Thomas in leading roles, along with Elton Landrew (Recipes for Love & Murder), Dillon Windvogel (Blood & Water), and South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) winnerBrendon Daniels (Zulu, Skemerdans, Five Fingers for Marseille). The eight-part series is directed by Jaco Bouwer (SXSW and SAFTA winner Gaia).

3. ADULTING S2 | Mondays from December 4, 2023

The popular series “Adulting” is back for a second season, featuring familiar faces dealing with the challenges of adulthood. With a mix of humor and drama, the show explores the antics of its characters, promising to continue raising eyebrows.

Adulting’s first season set a new record for the most first-day views on Showmax of any drama series, well ahead of Succession S4, The Last of Us S1 and The White Lotus S2 – the three most-nominated shows overall at the upcoming 75th Emmy Awards.

4. CONVICT CONMAN | Wednesdays, December 6 and 13

“Convict Conman” is a two-part true-crime series that investigates individuals accused of fraud and inappropriate behavior. The series sheds light on the journalistic efforts to uncover the truth, with the narrative spanning multiple years and cases.

Nine years later, in 2021, with de Villiers sentenced to life in jail, investigative journalist Jana Marx (Devilsdorp) receives a tip-off to look into Michael O’Connor. He runs a photography publication and is looking to start business and fashion magazines too. It’s during the COVID pandemic, so his staff have never met him – or even seen his face.

O’Connor claims de Villiers is a “good friend” but what else do they have in common?

5. SHAKA ILEMBE S1 | Binge from December 4

Set in the 1700s, “Shaka Ilembe” narrates the heroic rise of the iconic Zulu king, Shaka. The series boasts a star-studded cast and has already set records as the most-watched drama series on DStv ever.

Produced by the Oscar-nominated team at Bomb (Yizo Yizo), Shaka ILembe was six years in the making, consulting historians, academics and family descendants, including the late King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu and current monarch King Misuzulu kaZwelithini.

6. TROMPOPPIE S1 | Thursdays from December 7

“Trompoppie” unfolds the story of Luna, a talented gymnast thrust into the competitive world of drum majorettes. After a hazing ritual takes a dark turn, Luna finds herself entangled in a web of mystery and danger.

Trompoppie is the first Showmax Original from SAFTA- and Silwerskerm-winning writer and director Etienne Fourie (Stiekyt, Die Windpomp, Tydelike Terminaal). Multi-award winners Homebrew Films (2023 Silwerskerm winner Magda Louw) are producing.

7. WURA S2 | 4 episodes a week from December 4

The Nigerian telenovela “Wura” returns for a second season, promising more ruthless corporate intrigue and compelling storytelling.

8. DIE ONDERONSIE (THE QUARREL) | Streaming from December 1

A dark comedy film, “Die Onderonsie,” explores the dynamics among five ex-bandmates whose annual reunion takes a sinister turn. Filled with suspicion and violence, the film promises an engaging and twisted tale.

Die Onderonsie is written by rising star Morné Strydom, who also wrote and directed the wonderfully quirky short film Twintig Tone in ‘n Hangkas, which earned Pietie a Best Actor nomination at last year’s Silwerskerm Awards, among other accolades.

9. A ROYAL CHRISTMAS SURPRISE | Streaming from December 21

This Christmas-themed film follows Riley and Mandla as they navigate family dynamics and unexpected surprises. The film boasts a talented cast, including Thapelo Mokoena and Jennifer Freeman.
