Renowned artist Rasta is once again under scrutiny for his portrayal, or rather, misrepresentation of singer Zahara during her funeral at the East London International Convention Center (ELICC) in the Eastern Cape yesterday.
The inconsistency in Rasta’s depictions has sparked criticism from South Africans, who expressed great dissatisfaction with his portrayal of the late singer. Zahara, whose real name is Bulelwa Mkutukana, was laid to rest in a service attended by dignitaries such as Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa, Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) spokesperson Sinawo Tambo.
Rasta’s artistic style has often been criticized for its more caricature-like qualities rather than being recognized as true art. While he received some compliments for his work earlier in the year, particularly at the funeral of Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, his painting of Zahara has once again drawn negative attention.
South Africans expressed their disappointment with Rasta’s inconsistent artistic representations, highlighting the need for improvement and sensitivity, especially during formal occasions.
