In today’s day and age, it’s refreshing to see some families still upholding the significant tradition of taking their male children to initiation schools in the mountains or the bushes to be taught to transition from boy to man. This is tradition that had been passed down to male children over the years.
Once the customs has been successfully completed, the family celebrates by hosting umgidi, a traditional ceremony, officially welcoming the young man into adulthood surrounded by loved ones.
Television and radio personality Unathi Nkayi recently celebrated her son’s return from initiation school and has been sharing moments from her family’s celebration in Langa, Cape Town.
Her former husband, radio veteran Thomas “Bad Boy T” Msengana, was also featured in the posts, radiating pride over their son’s return.
“Tata ka Snako WE DID IT♥️ Ndiyabulela tata wabantwana bam. Ndizel’indoda namhlanje. I love our family,” wrote Msengana
Translation: We did it Snako’s father. Thank you, father of my children. I have birthed a man today. I love our family.
