Bafana Bafana’s journey through the group stage of the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) may not have been flawless, but it proved sufficient to secure their passage to the knockout stage.
In their concluding Group E match at Stade Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium, Bafana Bafana held Tunisia to a goalless draw on Wednesday night, securing a second-place finish in the group with four points. Their lone victory came from a commanding 4-0 win over Namibia, who ultimately claimed third place after a 0-0 draw with group leaders Mali in their last fixture.
Despite the varying results leading up to the match against Tunisia, Bafana Bafana’s second-place finish positions them to face the Group F winners in the knockout stage at Laurent Pokou Stadium in San Pedro on Tuesday night.
The clash with Tunisia held the weight of historical expectations, given Tunisia’s prior dominance over Bafana Bafana, having defeated them 2-0 and 3-1 during the group stage in 2006 and 2008. However, against predictions, the match concluded with both teams deadlocked at half-time and full-time, allowing Bafana Bafana to advance to the last 16 while eliminating Tunisia from the tournament.
