Eben Etzebeth wins Rugby Player of the Year award

Eben Etzebeth, the Springbok powerhouse, scooped up his second consecutive South African Rugby Player of the Year award at the glitzy 2023 ceremony in Johannesburg last night. But don’t expect him to be strutting around like a peacock. Nope, simply Etzebeth stays humble, giving props to the team.

The past couple of years have been a wild ride for Etzebeth and the Boks. He backed up his stellar 2022 season with another banger, helping the national squad snatch up their second straight Webb Ellis Cup. Yet, when asked if he’d been eyeing that shiny individual award, he shot back with a “nah.” For him, it’s all about the team hustle. “We play rugby, not tennis or golf,” he said.

Sure, he’s excited about winning the award two years running, especially with a World Cup win under his belt. At 32, you might think he’d be kicking back with a cold one, but he’s still yearning for that Springbok action. That green and gold jersey? That’s his driving force.

So, while some might see him as a seasoned player nearing the twilight of his career, Etzebeth’s still got that fire burning bright. Next up for him? Wales, then Ireland. He’s ready to tear it up for the Sharks and keep that Bok legacy alive and kicking.
