Orlando Pirates beat Kaizer Chiefs 3-2 over the weekend

Orlando Pirates soared into second place in the DStv Premiership standings after pulling off their first Soweto Derby double in 15 years with a nail-biting 3-2 victory over Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The match kicked off with Chiefs grabbing an early lead courtesy of Ashley du Preez, who silenced his critics with a swift strike just five minutes into the game, catching the Pirates defense off guard.

Monnapule Saleng swiftly retaliated, leveling the score shortly after Yusuf Maart’s reckless challenge stirred up both teams’ intensity levels.

The first half was a rollercoaster ride of end-to-end action, with both sides wreaking havoc on each other’s defenses with their blistering pace.

Just before halftime, Du Preez struck again, exploiting another defensive lapse to restore Chiefs’ lead, much to the frustration of the home fans.

In the second half, Pirates dominated the early stages, and their persistence paid off when debutant Thabiso Lebitso unleashed a stunning long-range shot that rattled the underside of Bruce Bvuma’s crossbar, leveling the score once again.

But the drama wasn’t over yet. Saleng seized the opportunity to put Pirates ahead for the first time, sneaking past Bvuma to slot the ball into the net after 68 minutes. It proved to be the decisive goal in a thrilling encounter that saw five goals scored for the first time in almost a decade.

With this crucial win, Pirates climbed to second place in the standings, tallying 33 points from 20 games, while Chiefs remained in sixth place, unable to fend off the Buccaneers’ relentless attack.
