The Joburg Post, an online news and media company owned by former SABC sports presenter Walter Mokoena, is in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons as disgruntled staff members accuse him of failing to pay their salaries.
According to reports, a senior staff member at The Joburg Post has spoken out about the ongoing payment issues, saying, “In 2023, I joined The Joburg Post, excited for the opportunity to contribute to the company’s growth. However, what started as enthusiasm soon turned into frustration and disappointment as I, along with my colleagues, experienced a series of injustices and unethical behaviour.”
The source further alleged that their salaries are often delayed, causing financial strain and eroding trust within the team. Another employee claimed that Mokoena is indifferent to their grievances, displaying an unfazed attitude when confronted.
When asked for comment, Mokoena chose not to respond directly to the allegations, saying, “I won’t comment as the matter would be determined in our court.”
Sources close to the situation suggest that Mokoena’s financial difficulties began following his loss of employment as the special advisor to former minister of sports, arts and culture Nathi Mthethwa. Additionally, his divorce from former president Jacob Zuma’s daughter, Nosizwe Vuso, reportedly added to his financial strain.
In 2022, Mokoena confirmed his split from Vuso, acknowledging the challenges of marriage and suggesting that he may be the source of the problem, saying, “Maybe I’m the problem. Maybe I’m not good at this thing. I tried my best on two occasions and I failed. I don’t think I’m good at this thing.”
Despite the setbacks, Mokoena remains optimistic about the future, emphasizing that both successes and failures are a part of life’s journey.
