2024 COPA America final: Argentina’s destiny gets MESSY!

The 2024 Copa America came to a tense curtain closer on July 14 in Miami Garden, USA. The match got off to a terrible start, due to a 90-minute delay as a result of commotion entering the stadium. This only highlighted the messy Copa final that was to ensue between Argentina and Colombia.

Additionally, turmoil between the fans and security personnel set off fireworks outside the stadium. Securities attempted to put a stop to stadium entry by non-ticket holders, which created chaos outside as fans wrestled their way into the game.

Nonetheless, the solution was found, and all gates were opened to the fans. The game only kicked off at 21:15 CST despite being set to start at 20:00.

    About the game…

La Albiceleste walked into the game the clear favourites. The reigning COPA champions were chasing another trophy to add to their impressive resume.

On the other hand, Colombia entered the game in superb form. They had gone unbeaten throughout the tournament and played amazing football thus far.

But the experience and management of high-stakes moments proved to be the key for the Argentines, as they ended up having the final say in an intense 1-0 victory.

In the first half, the Colombians paid no respect to their opponents. They put on a fearless display, tallying eight shots at goal and forcing Argentine goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez to make stunning saves. One of those shots was the right footed drive of Jhon Cordoba, who struck the post from outside the box at the 7th minute mark.

Inevitably, this sent a message to the 2022 World Cup winners, who instantly knew then that Los Cafeteros would not back down.

The commencement of the second half saw the Argentines needing a big wakeup call! Calmly and collectively, Head coach, Lionel Scaloni rallied his troops for the second period.

Moreover, they still had the legendary Lionel Messi, so there was no need for panic…

    A Messy Moment

Argentina’s biggest nightmare came true after an hour of football. A non-contact tussle with winger, Luis Diaz, brought the early end to Lionel Messi’s night. A heartbreaking moment for the 37-year-old captain, who lost his footing trying to chase down the Colombian winger. He rolled his ankle terribly, resulting in him taking off his boots and walking off the pitch on his own peril.

Messi sunk into his seat visibly distraught, along with the hopes of the Argentine fans in the stands. He was miserable, as he broke down into tears in the team dugout.

    Glimmer of Hope:

The remainder of the game saw the rest of the Argentine players pull together like never before. They dug deep without the leadership of their captain to find a way forward. Looking to the likes of Angel Di Maria for inspiration, the forward who has consistently stepped up for his country in big games certainly answered the call.

Di Maria danced through the Colombian defense, opening multiple chances for his team to grab the lead.

After 90 minutes, Argentina added the top scorer for the tournament, Lautaro Martinez, into the fold. He subbed on as a super sub, alongside midfield maestro Giovanni Lo Celso, emphasising the stacked talent the World Champions possess.

It only took 15 minutes for the super subs to impact the game. At the 112th minute mark, a swift tackle from Leandro Paredes, led to a deadly counterattack. The ball fell on Lo Celso’s feet, who beautifully lobbed the ball to his striker Martinez. One on one with only the keeper to beat, Lautaro added to his catalogue of goals with a sublime finish.

The crowd erupted as Argentina championed themselves one step closer to their destiny. The Colombians dropped to their feet in disbelief, ending what was a solid team display.

Here’s what fans on X had to say about the game…

@WeAreMessi posted, “CHAMPIONS, ARGENTINA HAVE DONE IT! THEY HAVE RETAINED THE COPA AMERICA”

@FabrizioRomano posted, “Argentina lift their 16th Copa América trophy!”

@CopaAmerica posted, “LAUTARO MARTÍNEZ: LA REDENCIÓN.”

La Albiceleste have written history, winning four major international trophies in four years. The dynasty has been achieved, as the Argentines step into the foothills of greatness.

As they bid farewell to international hero, Angel Di Maria, this is surely as one of the worthiest send offs. The storyline of Di Maria, Messi, Otamendi, known as “The Old Guard”, is one of the best cinematic scripts of redemption.

Acquitted are all the years and tears of sorrow; welcomed is the glory of success and accomplishment!
