As the Olympics kick off, all attention shifts towards the Blitzboks, South Africa’s renowned rugby sevens team. They have the honour of starting the action for Team South Africa, starting with two matches on Wednesday.
Known for their speed and agility, the Blitzboks have consistently delivered on the World Stage. Their tactical brilliance stands out and will certainly be put to the test at the Stade de France against Ireland.
It starts at 17:30pm CAT, and will be the fifth match of the day, promising to be a feisty encounter.
Also, they will take on New Zealand only four hours later at 21:30pm CAT, meaning they must keep their legs fresh. These opening games will be the first two games for the South African team and will surely set up interesting Pool A standings at the conclusion of the day.
Point to prove
The SA rugby sevens team has a rich history of success, particularly in the World Rugby Sevens series, where they have racked up multiple titles under their belt. They are relatively new to the Olympics, as the sport only joined the Games at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. A strong debut saw them claim the bronze medal, creating anticipation for their next Olympics appearance in Tokyo.
Unfortunately, in Tokyo they fell short in the quarterfinals against Fiji, who went on to win the 2020 Olympics sevens gold medal. Now, the Blitzboks seek to avenge themselves and finally bring the gold back to South Africa.
Driven by their past mistakes and experiences from previous tournaments, they are poised to make an even greater impact this time.
Preparing for the opener
Fans highly anticipate the team’s opening match in Paris, which will set the tone for Team South Africa’s Olympic campaign. As they take the field, they will embody the spirit of Mzansi, known for its sportsmanship and unity.
Led by new head coach, Phillip Snyman, the team has intensely prepared for their upcoming games. They have modified their strategies and honed their mental and physical readiness ahead of the Olympics.
