High Court Rules Against Balobedu Royal Council’s Bid to Stop Queen Modjadji TV Series

In a dramatic turn of events, the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria has dismissed the urgent application by the Balobedu Royal Council to halt the airing of the highly anticipated TV series Queen Modjadji on Mzansi Magic.

Acting Judge Jacques Minnaar, in delivering his ruling, highlighted that the application lacked urgency. “The applicants, Queen Modjadji VII, the Balobedu Royal Family, and Council, did not act in a timely manner. They waited until the production was completed to raise their objections,” Minnaar noted.

The Royal Council had argued that the series, produced by Duma Ka Ndlovu of Rhythm World Productions and set to air this Sunday, should not proceed as neither MultiChoice nor the producers had consulted with them adequately. They claimed the series had significant cultural, constitutional, and public importance that warranted their input and approval.

However, Judge Minnaar pointed out the series is a fictional work inspired by true events, set many years ago. “Each episode will begin with a disclaimer: ‘Historical drama inspired by true events.’ It is difficult to see how the legacy, dignity, or rights of the applicants, particularly the first applicant, will be infringed upon by this work of fiction,” he stated.

Interestingly, the Modjadji Royal Council contradicted the Balobedu Royal Council’s stance, claiming they had been consulted and had given their approval for the show’s airing.

The dispute between the Modjadji and Balobedu Royal Councils reflects ongoing tensions regarding succession to the throne, adding another layer of intrigue to the unfolding drama.

MultiChoice, the company behind Mzansi Magic, has expressed that the series, created by renowned poet and producer Ka Ndlovu, aims to offer viewers a deep dive into Lobedu culture and traditions. The show promises to depict the legendary Queen Modjadji’s rain-making abilities, adding a touch of mystique and cultural richness to the narrative.

Set to premiere on July 14, 2024, Queen Modjadji will air every Sunday at 8 PM on Mzansi Magic. Fans are eagerly awaiting the debut, which is poised to bring the fascinating story of Queen Modjadji to life, despite the legal hurdles and royal disagreements.
