Makhadzi Reveals she borrowed money from Mashonisa to attend the BET Hip-Hop Awards

Limpopo-born sensation Makhadzi made headlines at the 19th annual BET Hip-Hop Awards in Los Angeles, California, clinching the Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act award. However, it’s shocking how much lengths the star went to, to win this award!

Sitting down with MacG and Sol Phenduka on Podcast and Chill, Makhadzi revealed that she had to borrow money to cover her travel expenses for the awards show. Despite her financial hurdles, her determination to be present and represent her music on an international stage never changed.

“I’m going through a lot. It’s not a secret,” Makhadzi admitted. “Every money I get monthly I’m paying SARS, so I end up not having money for myself.”

Back in December, Sunday World reported that the singer owed the South African Revenue Service (SARS) R6.6 million, a debt which has since been reduced to R2.7 million thanks to the help of a tax consultant. Makhadzi confirmed she’s been diligently working to pay off this significant amount, often leaving her strapped for cash.

The singer explained the lengths she went to in order to attend the awards: “So for me to travel I have to go to mashonisa [loan sharks]. They [my team] have to borrow money for me so I can fly business class because I have to be the superstar that I am. Because I believe in myself and my career I’m like, let me do everything and go there.”

Despite the financial strain, Makhadzi’s belief in her talent and dedication to her career drove her to overcome these obstacles. Her victory over fellow South African artist Tyler ICU and other international stars is a testament to her resilience and talent.
