South Africa may not be hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix this year, but Oracle Red Bull Racing is bringing the adrenaline and roar of F1 right to the streets of Sandton! This October, the iconic Katherine Street in Sandton City will transform into a high-speed playground as the RB7, Oracle Red Bull Racing’s champion car, takes centre stage.
Get ready to witness British F1 legend David Coulthard lead an electrifying Showrun, giving South African fans an exhilarating taste of Formula 1 magic. The RB7, one of the most dominant machines in F1 history, secured a staggering 18 poles and 12 victories in the 2011 season, driving Oracle Red Bull Racing to their second consecutive Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships. This 2.4-litre V8 powerhouse is not just a car; it’s a spectacle, famed for its sharp design and visceral sound.
Oracle Red Bull Racing has a reputation for bringing F1 excitement to cities worldwide, from Santiago to Tokyo and even Cape Town. Now, in 2024, they’re returning to South Africa to mesmerize fans once again. David Coulthard, a familiar face to F1 enthusiasts, expressed his joy about the event: “I haven’t been to South Africa since we were in Cape Town in 2019, so I’m delighted we’re bringing Formula One back to Johannesburg.”
Coulthard, who joined Red Bull Racing in 2005 after a successful stint with McLaren, became the highest-scoring British driver in F1 history with 535 points, surpassing Nigel Mansell’s record of 482 points. Though he retired in 2008, Coulthard remains a beloved figure in the F1 community. Driving the championship-winning RB7, he promises an afternoon of high-octane excitement as he races through the iconic streets of Sandton.
“I’ll be driving a very special F1 car, demonstrating the power, energy, and excitement of what Grand Prix can bring. The RB7 churns out 750 horsepower and can push up to 18,000 RPMs,” Coulthard shared.
The Showrun will also feature amazing performances by world-class talents such as German drifter Elias Hountondji, one half of the famed ‘Red Bull Driftbrothers’ and a trained aerospace engineer, and motorbike stunt rider Arūnas ‘Aras’ Gibieža. Plus, fans can expect a few special surprises throughout the event.
