Exciting news for Mamelodi Sundowns fans! The return of star goalkeeper Ronwen Williams is said to be something that might be happening sooner than anyone anticipated, while midfield Teboho Mokoena has committed his future to the club with a massive new deal.
After starting the season without superstar, the Betway Premiership champions could soon have Williams back in action. The 32-year-old keeper has been side-lined due to injury, but according to coach Manqoba Mngqithi, his return might be imminent. Williams is expected to be fit enough to make his comeback as early as this Sunday’s MTN8 semi-final second leg against Stellenbosch FC in Tshwane.
“Ronwen [Williams] is very close; he’s off the physios now and just a step away from full training,” Mngqithi said, according to reports. “We’re hoping, if all goes well, he could be ready for the second round of the semifinal.” Sundowns supporters will be eager to see their number one back between the posts.
On the other hand, Sundowns have secured Teboho Mokoena for the long term. The 27-year-old midfielder, who has been linked with moves to Asia, Europe, and North Africa, has signed a new five-year contract, keeping him at the club until 2029. This is a significant win for Kabo Yellow, as Mokoena has been instrumental in their midfield since joining the club.
The deal, which could see Mokoena stay with Sundowns until he’s 32, puts to rest any immediate concerns about his future. Apart from this, Mokoena hasn’t given up on his dream of playing overseas. “The dream [to play in Europe] is still very much alive,” he shared, highlighting the upcoming opportunities in the FIFA Club World Cup, CAF Champions League, and the African Football League (AFL) as key motivations for staying with Sundowns.
“I’m happy to be at the club,” Mokoena added. “The reason I signed the contract is because I believe in the club’s project and want to be a part of it. We have so much to look forward to, from international competitions to representing Bafana Bafana.”
