Watch: Afro-Pop Drama Unveiled in the life of Malaika Group

Malaika, the Afro-pop group that once ruled the airwaves and we group listening to, especially their hit single, “Destiny,” is back in the spotlight—but this time, it’s not for a new release. The original trio, Tshedi Mholo, Bongani Nchang, and the late Jabulani Ndaba, captivated fans in the 2000s with their unique sound.

However, the days of Malaika seem to be officially long gone since the former members Mholo and Nchang are in a bitter feud over their iconic track.

Mholo left the band back in 2021, announcing her decision to no longer perform under the Malaika banner. The tension between Mholo and Nchang spilled over in public when they appeared on “Podcast and Chill” with Mac G and Sol Phenduka, each airing their grievances and recounting their version of the events that led to the fallout.

Nchang spoke about the origins of Malaika, reminiscing about how the band was formed and how Mholo joined the ensemble, eventually leading to the creation of “Destiny.” Mholo, on the other hand, expressed her frustrations with Nchang, citing issues like her exclusion from the song writing credits of “Destiny” and previous disputes over bookings and management.

According to Mholo, her contributions to the performance and arrangement of “Destiny” were significant enough to warrant recognition, a sentiment not reflected in the official credits. The song writing accolades went to Nchang and producer Godfrey Guffy Pilane, leaving Mholo feeling side-lined.

The drama escalated earlier this year when Mholo accused Nchang of continuing to use her name to secure gigs three years after her departure. She was particularly incensed by Nchang’s performances of Malaika’s classic hits with a new female vocalist, Tsoakae Molipa, without her consent. This, however, wasn’t the first time the band faced internal discord. Even before Mholo’s departure, Malaika had experienced periods of solo performances and internal rifts.

Despite the heated exchanges on the podcast, no resolution was reached. Mholo has since demanded that her vocals be removed from the backing tracks used by Nchang during performances. Nchang claims to have complied, ensuring her voice is no longer featured.
