Doja Cat Steals the Show at Global Citizen Festival with South African Pride

The Global Citizen Festival made a triumphant return to New York City’s Central Park on September 28, delivering an unforgettable day filled with music, activism, and unity. Known for its powerful blend of entertainment and global change-making, the 2024 edition of the festival didn’t disappoint.

With over 60,000 attendees, the event was perfectly timed to coincide with the conclusion of the United Nations General Assembly and Climate Week NYC—a crucial moment where young people, artists, and world leaders came together to spark real, meaningful change.

The star-studded line-up was nothing short of impressive, with Global Citizen Ambassador Hugh Jackman taking the stage as host, ensuring the energy stayed high throughout the day. But the undeniable show-stealer? Doja Cat, aka Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, who took centre stage and left the crowd in awe.

Doja Cat not only wowed with her performance but made a stunning fashion statement in a South African flag-themed dress, paying homage to her heritage. Photos and videos of the bold look quickly went viral, sparking thousands of comments and reactions from fans around the globe.

Back home, South African fans couldn’t be prouder, praising Doja for repping Mzansi on a global platform. One fan on X (formerly Twitter) gushed, “She’s reconnecting with her roots so much this year, and I’m so happy. I need her to do a show in SA, too, oh my god.” Another chimed in, “She’s embracing her heritage beautifully this year, making me so happy! I hope she does a show in SA, too—oh my gosh.”

Doja Cat’s connection to South Africa runs deep as she’s the daughter of Dumisani Dlamini, the renowned South African actor best known for his iconic role in Sarafina. Doja’s mother, Deborah Elizabeth Sawyer, met Dlamini in the 1990s when he was touring the U.S. with the Sarafina cast. While the couple eventually split, with Doja staying in the States, her South African roots have always remained part of her story.
