The festival isn’t just about the present; it’s a celebration of the past and future of Hip Hop. This year, ‘Hennessy Back to the City’ honours albums that turn 20, with performances from legends like Zubz, Pitch Black Afro, and Mr. Selwyn. And let’s not forget the iconic HHP, represented by Lection—who will remind us of the genre’s rich legacy in South Africa. Plus, a special “Heritage” tribute from Thebe will further underscore the deep connection between Hip Hop, poetry, and the struggle for freedom in South Africa.
Speaking of freedom, 2024 also marks a significant milestone—30 years of democracy. Ritual Media Group (RMG) Director Osmic Menoe reflected on this, saying: “Every year we aim to make the festival a worthwhile experience. People travel from different parts of the country and continent to experience BTTC, and we always step it up. This year’s also special because we are celebrating 30 years of democracy as a country. Hip-Hop and poetry played a vital role in our history’s struggle, and we want to celebrate our freedom.”
