Inaugural Privately funded and Independent Women’s Track Meeting
In a historic first, Athlos, the privately funded and independent athletics star event, backed with big prize money, happened at the Icahn Stadium, in New York City last night. (26 Sept).
Alexis Ohanian, an American internet entrepreneur and investor who is best known as the co-founder and former executive chairman of the social media site Reddit and the founder of Seven Seven Six, saw the opportunity to bring the world’s leading women’s athletic stars onto a new platform.
In a recent interview, the tech multi-millionaire said that there are so many amazing women’s athletes who hit the world stage at the Olympics every four years with huge fan appeal, and then disappear into obscurity, and he saw the need to provide a regular platform for the fans to watch and enjoy these amazing athletes.
“The Olympics are over, but this sport is still just as premium, just as serious, these stars are just as big and bright” commented Alexis.
With a $60 000 prize purse for each race, some of the best women’s athletes in the world competed in a packed stadium with an amazing vibe that was described by one athlete – Katelyn Hutchison, as unmatched.
The event was broadcast live on X and various other independent media platforms and has created what is likely to be a new era in women’s athletics, allowing the world’s best to compete more regularly and earn well.
Notable winners in the first Athos meeting were:
- Mareleidy Pulino with a 49.59 sec win in the 400m
- Marie Josee Ta Lou-Smith with a 10.98 Sec win in the 100m sprint
- Jasmine Camancho-Quinn with a fast 12.36 sec win in the 100m hurdle sprint
