Elaine named Spotify EQUAL Africa’s Artist for October

In a bold and exciting move, Spotify has crowned multi-award-winning R&B sensation Elaine as the EQUAL Artist for October 2024. This recognition marks a new milestone for the South African singer, who first made waves as a Spotify RADAR artist and skyrocketed to global fame with her debut EP, Elements, in 2019. Elaine’s meteoric rise has captivated listeners across South Africa, the U.S., Nigeria, Kenya, and the U.K., establishing her as a true international star.

With a sound that marries soul with contemporary R&B, Elaine’s music has a magical way of resonating with fans from all corners of the globe. Songs like “You’re the One” and “When I’m in Love” have become anthems for lovers of heartfelt lyrics and unforgettable melodies. Her soulful storytelling touches on themes that are both personal and universal, connecting her deeply with audiences.

Expressing her excitement, Elaine said, “I’m honoured to be part of the EQUAL program and incredibly proud to stand as an independent African woman, carving out my own path and claiming space in an industry traditionally dominated by men.” Her words are a testament to her determination to inspire and uplift, both through her music and her message.

But Elaine isn’t just resting on her laurels. She’s gearing up for the release of her latest project, Stone Cold Heart, dropping on October 11th. This album is set to take listeners on a raw, emotional journey through the trials of trauma, heartbreak, and ultimate transformation. With a mix of soulful ballads and fresh new sounds, Stone Cold Heart promises to be a cathartic experience for anyone who’s faced life’s toughest moments.

Elaine’s influence extends beyond her music. Known for advocating mental health awareness and motivating young people to chase their dreams, she’s become a role model for many. Her voice, both on and off the stage, is a powerful force for positive change.

Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, couldn’t be prouder of this partnership: “Elaine exemplifies the caliber of talent the EQUAL Africa program aims to support. Spotify is thrilled to help amplify her voice and showcase her incredible talent to the world.” The EQUAL Africa program is dedicated to empowering female artists across the continent, giving them the platform they deserve to break boundaries and thrive.

We sat down with Elaine to learn more about the artist behind the music, and here’s what she had to say:

    1. What’s one thing your fans might be surprised to learn about you? “My fans always seem to think I can’t speak any South African languages—it’s hilarious! Just to clear that up, I actually speak quite a few fluently.”

    2. When did you know that music was your destiny? “I’ve loved music ever since I was a little girl. I’ve been singing since I was six years old—it’s my main source of pride and gives me purpose. That’s why I’ll never stop singing.”

    3. Which African artists inspired you growing up? “Lebo Mathosa and Brenda Fassie—absolute legends.”

    4. How would you describe your music to someone who’s never heard it? “My music is a true reflection of my life, heart, and thoughts. It’s always evolving, but at its core, it’s real R&B—emotional, raw, and authentic.”

    5. Any advice for someone afraid to follow their dreams? “You deserve to give yourself a chance. Go for it.”
