Chidimma Adetshina, the Soweto-born model now reigning as Miss Universe Nigeria 2024, is basking in newfound pride as she celebrates Nigeria’s Independence Day. In a heartfelt Instagram post, she proclaimed her love for her father’s homeland, honouring Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity and resilience. But the road to the Miss Universe Nigeria crown was anything but smooth.
Adetshina, who was crowned in August, first made headlines when she entered the Miss South Africa pageant. Her Nigerian-sounding surname caused quite a stir, sparking heated debates online. Many South Africans questioned her participation in the prestigious competition, leading to an investigation by Home Affairs. The department probed claims that her mother might have committed identity fraud at the time of her birth, but despite the uproar, Adetshina ultimately withdrew from the contest.
That’s when a twist of fate led her to West Africa. Shortly after her Miss SA exit, organizers of Miss Universe Nigeria invited Adetshina to compete in their pageant. She embraced the opportunity, and soon, the young beauty queen found herself with an unexpected fanbase from South Africa. Netizens rallied behind her, flooding the Miss Universe Nigeria voting platforms with support. Within days, she surged ahead in the polls, amassing nearly 20,000 votes in the lead-up to the grand finale.
In celebration of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day, Adetshina shared her thoughts in a reflective post:
“Happy New Month. Nigeria at 64. As the new Miss Universe Nigeria, I embody a nation rich in cultural diversity, deep-rooted historical heritage, and unwavering resilience. Independence Day is not just a day to celebrate our freedom, it is a day to showcase our unity, love, harmony, and strength as a nation.”
Adetshina’s new role has seen her engage with key stakeholders and make numerous public appearances in Nigeria, and she’s clearly committed to her newfound identity. But her journey isn’t over yet. In November, she’ll take the stage in Mexico City, representing Nigeria at the Miss Universe competition.
