Spotify is turning up the volume on inclusivity with the launch of its new GLOW South Africa playlist, a bold extension of its global GLOW initiative. This playlist is designed to celebrate and uplift LGBTQIA+ artists and creators, reinforcing Spotify’s commitment to showcasing queer talent not just during Pride Month, but all year long.
With a 57% year-on-year increase in local streams, it’s clear that South Africans are already embracing the global GLOW playlist. Major cities like Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Cape Town are leading the charge, with listeners tuning in to discover the vibrant mix of queer voices. South African artists such as Angie oeh, Dee Traits, and Lelowhatsgood have earned spots on the global playlist, ensuring local representation shines on a worldwide stage.
Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, emphasizes the platform’s dedication to supporting LGBTQIA+ artists. “At Spotify, we believe in elevating and supporting LGBTQIA+ voices beyond just Pride Month. This is a core part of who we are as a platform. We’re committed to ensuring that queer artists have the visibility and amplification they deserve, all year round,” Okumu shares.
Spotify’s advocacy for the LGBTQIA+ community goes far beyond playlist curation. Collaborations with queer icons, like South African music legend Thandiswa Mazwai, underline Spotify’s investment in the country’s queer music scene. Recently, the Mother of Music event in Cape Town further solidified this support, featuring energetic Vogueing performances and showcases from LGBTQIA+ artists.
To celebrate the launch of the GLOW South Africa playlist, Spotify is hosting a special event on 19 October, spotlighting local queer talent and giving artists a platform to share their voices and stories.
More than just a one-time celebration, Spotify’s GLOW programme is an ongoing initiative to ensure LGBTQIA+ creators receive the recognition and support they deserve every day of the year. The GLOW South Africa playlist is another exciting milestone in Spotify’s mission to amplify queer voices in the country’s dynamic music scene.
