In an unexpected and well, quite interesting scandal that has gripped Equatorial Guinea, explicit videos featuring Baltasar Ebang Engonga, a high-ranking civil servant and director of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), have flooded social media.
These videos, allegedly shot in his finance ministry office, show Engonga in compromising situations with multiple women, including the wives of prominent officials. The affair has prompted government intervention to curb the tapes’ spread, though the scandal continues to unfold.
The tapes went viral across various platforms, starting on WhatsApp before hitting Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter). Nicknamed “Bello” for his supposed good looks, Engonga, who is a married man and father, has become the subject of intense public scrutiny, not only for the nature of his actions but for the choice of location: his own government office.
What makes it all worse is that Engonga is already under investigation for alleged embezzlement and is currently held at the infamous Black Beach prison. On Monday, Vice President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue took to X to address the scandal, announcing a crackdown on public officials engaging in “inappropriate” office activities.
Obiang ordered the suspension of any civil servants caught “engaging in sexual relations in ministry offices,” citing violations of both the code of conduct and public ethics. “As the government, we cannot continue to see families destroyed,” the vice president declared, underscoring the scandal’s far-reaching social impact. The government has even directed the telecommunications ministry to curb the distribution of pornographic videos online, although the content continues to circulate.
The leak, reportedly involving over 400 videos, has not only disrupted internet service in the country, severely limiting image downloads, but also stirred up rumours that other high-profile figures could be implicated. With Equatorial Guinea’s top prosecutor, Anatolio Nzang Nguema, hinting at possible health charges should Engonga test positive for any sexually transmitted diseases, the situation continues to spiral.
The sad news is that one of the women involved on the sex tapes has unfortunately committed suicide and passed away.
