Drake drops legal fight over ‘Not Like Us’

Drake’s pulled the plug on his lawsuit against Universal Music Group and Spotify, after accusing the two giants of running a shady ‘scheme’ to mess with streaming numbers.

The whole drama was linked to Kendrick Lamar’s diss track, ‘Not Like Us,’ which Drake said was at the center of the alleged ‘scheme.

In November of last year, Drake’s company, Frozen Moments LLC, filed a petition in a New York court, seeking to preserve and disclose information that could serve as evidence in a potential lawsuit against UMG, the distributor for both Drake and Lamar’s record labels.

Speculation swirled about whether Drake had a strong case or would be forced to take the matter to court. However, on Tuesday, Drake and his team withdrew the petition, putting an end to the uncertainty.

Lawyers representing Drake and Frozen Moments LLC voluntarily dismissed the pre-action filing, effectively closing the case.

According to Variety, court documents explained that the rapper met with representatives from both Spotify and UMG on Tuesday to discuss the legal matter.

“Spotify responded by filing opposition papers in late December, asserting that it had no economic incentive to favour “Not Like Us” over any of Drake’s tracks.”

A spokesperson for the company explained, “Only one of Spotify for Artists’ tools, Marquee, was purchased on behalf of the song, for €500, to promote it in France. Marquee is a visual ad that is clearly disclosed to users as a Sponsored Recommendation.”

The platform also denied any arrangement where UMG “charged Spotify 30 percent lower licensing rates for ‘Not Like Us’ in exchange for Spotify actively promoting the track,” including to users searching for other artists.
