Drake vs. UMG: The legal battle over ‘Not Like Us’ heats up

When we thought the beef was squashed, it turns out, it’s far from over.

Drake’s back in the headlines, but this time, it’s not about bars or album drops—he’s taking on his label, Universal Music Group, in a lawsuit that’s got the whole industry buzzing.

Why? Because Drizzy is suing UMG over what he’s calling a “false and malicious narrative” being spread about him.

The 6 God claims the label has been fueling rumours that he’s a pedophile—allegations that he says are not only untrue but are damaging his reputation.

This follows his lawyer withdrawing the legal action he filed against UMG and Spotify in New York Supreme Court on Tuesday over Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us.”

According to TMZ, Drake filed a defamation lawsuit on Wednesday morning in federal court in NYC, taking aim at UMG for releasing and promoting Kendrick Lamar’s fiery diss track, “Not Like Us.”

In the legal documents obtained by TMZ Hip Hop, Drake alleges that UMG was fully aware that the lyrics and imagery in the track—particularly the false and harmful references to him as a pedophile.

“In the suit he calls Kendrick’s hit filled with “inflammatory and shocking allegations” was a “gold mine” for UMG and he says they had an ulterior financial motive in promoting it.”

It’s reported that Drake claims his label actively pushed “Not Like Us” to undermine his music and brand, knowing it would devalue his reputation. According to Drake, UMG used this tactic to gain leverage in future contract negotiations with him.

According to TMZ, Drake claims UMG went all-in on promoting “Not Like Us,” attaching the label of “chart-topper” to the track despite knowing the title was based on fraudulent data.

He alleges the label’s goal was to devalue his own music and brand, ultimately giving UMG more leverage in future contract negotiations with him.

Surprisingly, Drake isn’t throwing shots at Kendrick Lamar in the lawsuit.

He states, “This lawsuit is not about the artist who created ‘Not Like Us.’ It is, instead, entirely about UMG, the music company that decided to publish, promote, exploit, and monetize” the song which it knew contained false claims.
