South Africa mourns the loss of kwaito legend Doc Shebeleza

South Africa is grieving the loss of another music icon with the passing of kwaito star Doc Shebeleza, who died earlier this morning at his home.

The legendary artist, born Victor Bogopane, died at the age of 51 earlier this morning.

His passing was confirmed by his manager, Shakes Mavundla, in an interview with Times Live on Thursday.

Mavundla shared that Shebeleza passed away around 10:30 AM, just days after being discharged from the hospital on Monday.

The Ebumnandini hitmaker’s passing comes as a shock to many, as he had previously faced health challenges.

Last year, he was hospitalized and underwent successful surgery after being admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a private hospital in Johannesburg.

Two weeks later, he reported feeling better but asked his fans to continue praying for his recovery.

His family had also reached out to the public, with his mother appealing to the Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, as well as Gauteng’s MEC for Education, Arts, Sports, Culture, and Recreation, Matome Chiloane, to help raise funds for the life-saving operation scheduled for February.

Doc Shebeleza was a vibrant force in the South African music industry and a prominent figure in the kwaito genre.

Known for his captivating voice and relatable lyrics, Shebeleza was more than just a singer and songwriter; he was a cultural icon.

Doc Shebeleza’s notable hits include S’kumfete and Amantombazane.

Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture Gayton McKenzie described Doc Shebeleza’s death as a “significant loss for South Africa and the entire music industry.”

“On behalf of the ministry, I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the countless fans whose lives he touched,” McKenzie said.

“South Africa has not only lost a music legend, but also a compassionate soul whose contributions to our cultural heritage and community upliftment will never be forgotten. His music, laughter, and legacy will continue to resonate in our hearts.”
