South African singer Winnie Khumalo has passed away at 51 following a short illness on the morning of Tuesday, January 7.
Khumalo’s sister, Tshepi Akeepile, confirmed to SABC News that the singer had been unwell for a short period. Though there were signs of improvement, Khumalo woke up feeling unwell again on the morning of her passing.
Akeepile shared that Khumalo’s daughter, Rethabile, was away at the time and had to rush back home to accompany her mother to the hospital.
“Unfortunately, during their drive to the hospital, she passed away. She was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital,” Akeepile said.
Winnie Khumalo made a significant mark in South Africa’s music scene with her hit track “I Just Wanna Live My Life”, released after she signed with Kalawa Jazzmee Records. The song earned gold status after selling over 25,000 copies, cementing her place in the hearts of music lovers.
Khumalo’s musical journey began at just 15 years old, with her early albums Hey Laitie and Tshina Tshina, both produced by renowned South African music figure Sello Chicco Twala.
Throughout her career, Khumalo collaborated with many prominent South African artists, including Brenda Fassie, Pure Magic, Sipho Mbele, Brothers of Peace (B.O.P), Zonke Dikana, DJ Cleo, and Bongo Maffin.
In addition to her vocal talents, Khumalo also showcased her acting skills, making appearances on popular television shows such as Muvhango and Mponeng, as well as starring in a stage play titled The Journey.
After a successful career, Khumalo took a break from the entertainment industry to raise her two children, Rethabile and Ntando.
She made a triumphant return to music with her memorable hit “I Just Wanna Live My Life”, which resonated deeply with fans.
Khumalo leaves behind her children, Rethabile and Ntando, three grandchildren, her mother, and three sisters.
