Mzansi is celebrating a powerful cultural milestone as Amapiano DJ duo TXC claimed the Best New International Act at the 2025 BET Awards in Los Angeles — making history as the first South African DJ duo to win this global honour.
Their triumph at the 18th annual BET Awards, one of the most prestigious platforms celebrating Black excellence in music, film, and culture, is more than just a personal win. It’s a breakthrough moment for South African music, a defining victory for homegrown talent, and a powerful message to aspiring creatives.
Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Peace Mabe, congratulated the rising stars, calling their win a national triumph and a moment of pride for the country’s creative sector.
In her message, Mabe praised TXC for their groundbreaking achievement and for shining a global spotlight on South African sound.
“TXC’s win is a beautiful reminder of the extraordinary talent we have in this country. These young women have worked tirelessly, broken barriers, and shown that South African sound can resonate across the world. Their win is South Africa’s win.”
She added that TXC’s moment on the world stage sends an important message to the country’s youth and creative communities.
“This moment belongs to every young girl with a dream and to every artist who dares to be different. What TXC have achieved is not just personal — it is symbolic. It tells our youth that global stages are within reach.”
Known for their signature take on Amapiano and bold, genre-defying performances, TXC has steadily built an international following. Their music and presence have redefined South African club culture and helped solidify Amapiano as a global force.
Deputy Minister Mabe also used the opportunity to reaffirm the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture’s ongoing commitment to empowering creatives. She noted that TXC’s global success underscores the importance of sustained investment in the arts — from grassroots development to international promotion.
“We remain committed to nurturing our creatives from the ground up. Our job is to make sure that more artists like TXC have the space and support to rise, thrive, and represent our culture with pride.”
Mabe also reminded South Africans to honour the legacy of those who paved the way. Under her leadership, the Van Toeka Af Living Legends Recognition Series, launched in 2023, continues to pay tribute to cultural icons whose work laid the foundation for today’s artists.
“Today we celebrate TXC. But we also remember that today’s victories are built on yesterday’s foundations. That’s what keeps our culture alive.”
