Artistry Jazz Club returns with the second episode of The Director’s Cut, a monthly Sunday series that brings together the worlds of live music and cinema, creating an evening where the stage becomes a cinematic set and every performance unfolds like a scene.
Taking place on Sunday, 4 October at Artistry in Sandton, the second edition welcomes two distinct musical voices to the stage: MandiFeze, a music and theatre sonic architect duo, and NU-BAM, a scholar, trumpeter, improviser, composer, bandleader and arranger.
WHERE LIVE MUSIC MEETS CINEMA
The Director’s Cut is built around a simple idea: what if a live music performance felt like watching a film?
For each edition, artists are invited to move beyond the expected. Alongside songs audiences may already know, they premiere hidden gems, reinterpretations and moments from their musical worlds that deserve their own spotlight. There are no traditional song introductions and no breaking of the fourth wall. Instead, the performance moves continuously, allowing the audience to become fully immersed in the experience.
The details of the evening extend beyond the stage. Guests are encouraged to dress for the occasion, while tickets take inspiration from authentic film passes. Performances begin with the familiar snap of a clapperboard, signalling the start of another chapter.
MEET THE ARTISTS
For Episode 02, MandiFeze and NU-BAM bring two different approaches to sound and performance into the same cinematic space. MandiFeze’s work sits at the intersection of music and theatre, creating an immersive sonic language, while NU-BAM draws from his extensive practice as a trumpeter, improviser, composer, bandleader and arranger.
Together, they continue The Director’s Cut’s exploration of how music can be experienced not simply as a performance, but as a story, an atmosphere and a world of its own.
A SPACE FOR ARTISTIC EXPRESSION
What's your hot take on this story?
The Director’s Cut is part of Artistry’s ongoing commitment to creating spaces where South African artists can experiment, connect with audiences and present their work in ways that extend beyond conventional live performance.
This Sunday, the lights go down, the clapperboard goes up, and the music takes centre stage.
Welcome to The Director’s Cut.
