Gauteng’s morning radio scene has received a major shake-up. After years away from mainstream radio, veteran broadcaster DJ Fresh has officially made his return. From 1 July 2026, DJ Fresh will take over as the new host of Kaya 959’s popular morning show, Kaya Breakfast. His return comes after the surprise resignation of Sizwe Dhlomo, who led the show for six years before stepping down in late May.
The move marks a major moment for Kaya 959, as the station brings back one of South Africa’s most recognisable radio voices to strengthen its position in the competitive breakfast radio space. Fresh will not be doing it alone. Joining him on the 06:00 to 09:00 weekday slot are longtime collaborator and producer Thato Mataboge, as well as experienced broadcaster Mpho Maboi.
For radio fans, the reunion is a special one. Fresh revealed that the trio last shared a studio around 20 years ago, making this a full-circle moment. He described the return as feeling like “coming home” and said they are excited to create a morning show that listeners will look forward to every day. With a career spanning more than 30 years, DJ Fresh has played a major role in shaping South African radio. His journey includes iconic moments at stations such as YFM, 5FM, and Metro FM.
