Celebrity stylists don’t often joke about being fired by a client. Law Roach just did, and he’s laughing about it.

Roach, the “image architect” behind many of Zendaya’s and Celine Dion’s biggest looks, explained that his first stint working with Keke Palmer, years ago, didn’t quite work out. They teamed up again in 2023, when Palmer was pregnant with her son Leo, but she wasn’t feeling his vision for her maternity looks. When he pushed to show off her baby bump, she called him with a message that stuck.

In her words, as he tells it, he might be the best stylist in the world, but he wasn’t the best stylist for her.

Roach wasn’t offended. He recalled the call at a panel for his book, How to Build a Fashion Icon, and told the crowd he loved it. The best part of the story is that he agrees with her. Palmer joked that Roach lives for a drag, and he ended the moment by telling her he would always love her.

There was no love lost, and the two have stayed great friends. Roach has also spoken about the moment Palmer fired him on her own podcast. Palmer has since leaned on other stylists for her looks, including the duo Wayman Bannerman and Micah McDonald for her maternity style.

It’s a good lesson in how to part ways: say what isn’t working, keep it honest and stay kind. Sometimes the best stylist in the world still isn’t the right fit, and a good friendship can survive it.
