Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s daughter-in-law, Kelsea Tadiwa Tafirenyika, has found herself back in custody just moments after being granted bail in a separate drug-related case.
Tafirenyika, 22, was rearrested on Thursday after securing US$1,000 bail from the High Court in connection with charges relating to alleged drug dealing. She was subsequently taken before the Harare Magistrates’ Court, where she faced fresh charges of money laundering and possession of a forged identity document.
According to prosecutors, Tafirenyika allegedly laundered approximately US$9.35 million in proceeds believed to have been generated through drug dealing.
The State claims the money was used to acquire a portfolio of properties and luxury vehicles over a period of roughly three-and-a-half years. Court papers reportedly put the value of 10 properties and eight vehicles at US$9.35 million, while prosecutors also allege that she owns additional properties in Dubai and South Africa.
The development came shortly after Tafirenyika was released from Chikurubi Maximum Prison. She had been granted bail alongside her uncle and co-accused Isaac Arab Jessub, after the High Court overturned an earlier decision to keep them in custody. Both were ordered to pay US$1,000 bail, surrender their passports and report to the police every two weeks.

Tafirenyika’s freedom was short-lived. According to reports, she was immediately taken into custody again and later appeared before magistrate Feresi Chakanyuka to face the new allegations.
The latest charges add to an already serious legal battle involving the president’s daughter-in-law. Earlier this month, Tafirenyika was arrested following a police raid at her Greystone Park residence. Prosecutors alleged that detectives recovered pharmaceutical drugs, including pethidine and morphine, as well as cannabis. She was subsequently charged with unlawfully dealing in dangerous drugs.
The State has also previously alleged that Tafirenyika was using two different national identity documents, with investigators claiming one was in the name of “Gertrude Badza” while the other carried her alleged genuine name, Kelsea Tadiwa Tafirenyika.
Tafirenyika is married to Collins Mnangagwa, one of President Mnangagwa’s twin sons. For now, the allegations against her remain before the courts and she has not been convicted of the offences she faces.
