South Africa has lost one of its most beloved musical voices. Veteran singer, guitarist, and composer Babsy Mlangeni passed away on Thursday evening, 1 October 2026, at the age of 83, following a short illness, bringing to an end a remarkable career that spanned almost six decades.

A Voice That Crossed Every Boundary

Born Bernard Mlangeni in Orlando East, Soweto, on 24 February 1943, Mlangeni's story was one of resilience from the very start. He lost his eyesight at just three years old after a serious illness while staying with his grandmother in Daggaskraal. Despite doctors being unable to restore his sight, his family remained committed to his growth, and he went on to attend the Athlone School for the Blind in Cape Town, where he first learned to play the guitar.

His musical career took off in the 1960s when he joined The All Rounders, a group made up entirely of blind musicians formed in Soweto. From there, Mlangeni built a solo career that would make him one of the most recognisable voices in South African music, breaking out in the early 1970s with the hit "Bua Nnete." He went on to release a string of beloved songs, including "Sala Emma," "Botsotso," "Lonely Man," and "Umadlembathini," recording music in isiZulu, Sesotho, and isiXhosa, a true testament to his ability to connect with audiences across South Africa's many cultures and languages.

More Than Music

Beyond his contribution to South African sound, Mlangeni was a quiet trailblazer for people living with disabilities. At a time when opportunities for visually impaired musicians were scarce, Mlangeni defied the odds and built a lasting, successful career, becoming an inspiration to those who came after him, most notably mentoring fellow visually impaired musician Steve Kekana.

His contribution to the industry did not go unnoticed. Mlangeni was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the South African Music Awards, a recognition of both his artistic legacy and the barriers he broke along the way.

Fans and fellow musicians alike have taken to social media to honour his memory, with one tribute reading: "Despite living without sight, you shared your gift with the nation, reminding us that music is not only seen but felt deep within the soul. Your talent, resilience and contribution to SA music will never be forgotten."

Babsy Mlangeni leaves behind a musical catalogue that shaped generations of South African listeners, and a legacy of resilience that will continue to inspire long after his passing. Rest in peace to a true icon of South African music.
